about us...
Hi!
I’m Mary Perkins, founder and proprietor of Tailoring Plus. This page is a little about me, the person behind the business and this site.
Ever since I was seven years old, when I’d cut up used clothes and make outfits for dolls, I knew I’d enjoy taking apart clothes and restyling them. I started sewing part-time just after I got married. Money was tight, so we traded a used car for a sewing machine. The rest, as they say, is history.
My work experience is broad. Before starting Tailoring Plus, I managed the tailoring department at Joubert’s in Whitman. I was a tailor at Kennedy’s, a men’s fashion store, and at Pantiques, a high-end fashion boutique. Wanderlust took me to Las Vegas in the late ‘70s, where I had a delightful stay at Kimme Lee Fashion Designs, designing dresses and altering performer’s costumes and other clothing.
When not employed full-time, I was a housewife and mother, filling spare hours with complicated beadwork, teaching sewing, and lots of custom work. Offbeat jobs always seemed to find me: Now and then, I’d repair napkins and tablecloths for the Whitton House restaurant in Norwell; I even created a nun’s habit for troll dolls!
I started Tailoring Plus in 1989, and have been at the same location, full time, ever since. While other tailors come and go, I’ve maintained and grown my business. My success is no mystery — I love making people look good, I don’t skimp on quality, and I’m honest with my clientele.
I’m proud to say that among my many hundreds of happy customers are a few celebrities: Dick Johnson, Director of The Artie Shaw Orchestra, and Mark Gordon, who starred in the movie, “Lost in Space”, to name just a couple. My tailoring helps even the stars shine a little brighter!
Please call or stop by the shop and tell me how I can help you; I look forward to meeting you in person.
